A Taste of Drawing

  • Jervaulx Hall, St Wilfreds Community Centre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This evening will be an exciting opportunity to dip your toe into the world of drawing, to blow away the cobwebs, to laugh in the face of fear and make some extraordinary marks on the page. In an evening combining lecture, activity, play and discussion Mat will show and discuss drawing across history and cultures and hopefully ignite your belief in your ability to dive in and draw.

This event will be inspirational and informative for students of any age or experience, and serves as an excellent “taster” for those interested in taking the “Introduction to Drawing” class which commences the following week.

Intuitive Perspective

  • Jervaulx Hall, St Wilfred's Community Centre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Perspective is one of those areas that so many representational artists struggle with, guess at, or avoid altogether, and, in fact, it took the brightest minds of the rennaisance to work it out in the first place. Giotto was no numbscull, but his perspective might be graded as “C+, nice try”.

There are so many books out there explaining the principles of perspective, but most are a deadly bore, and few seem to deal with the actual problem of how to draw what we see without turning it into a technical excercise.

This workshop will explain how we experience the world of single point and two point perspective in an intuitive way and the excercises will equip you with techniques which can be directly applied in your drawings and paintings. This workshop will give you the tools to depict real or imaginary objects and spaces in linear perspective without any technical drawing and absolutely No Rulers Required!

This workshop is an excellent starting point and is strongly recommended for those wishing to explore further in my second workshop “Another level of Perspective, From 3 Point to Infinity”

Materials required are an A2 drawing pad, regular drawing pencils and at least one coloured pencil. Other materials are provided at the workshop.

There will be a 45 minute break for lunch. Bring your own to eat in the grounds of St Wilfred’s or take a stroll into central Ripon.
